In 2018, the Hungarian Unitarian Church celebrated its 450th anniversary, made possible by the 1568 Diet of Torda's religious law. This law allowed various Reformation branches to form independent churches, establishing the four accepted religions: Catholic, Reformed, Lutheran, and Unitarian.
The Unitarian Church was founded by Ferenc Dávid in 1568, marking the Diet of Torda as the first proclamation of freedom of conscience. The faith quickly spread beyond Transylvania, notably into Hungary.
After the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, most of the church's districts became part of Romania, with only the Budapest district remaining in Hungary. For a long time, this district was managed as part of the Transylvanian church. In 1968, the Hungarian Unitarian Church was established independently. Following the death of its last bishop, Csaba Rázmány, reunification negotiations began, leading to the Hungarian Unitarian Church Representative Council's acceptance of the reunification agreement on November 20, 2010. The legal merger was finalized with the adoption of a unified Basic Law.
On June 28, 2012, the Hungarian Unitarian Church and the Transylvanian Unitarian Church officially merged, forming the current Hungarian Unitarian Church.
