Deinotherium is an extinct genus of large, elephant-like proboscideans from the middle Miocene to the early Pleistocene. Although similar in appearance to modern elephants, Deinotherium had a more flexible neck, limbs suited for a cursorial lifestyle, and tusks that grew downward and curved back from the lower jaw, unlike the upper mandible tusks of contemporary elephants. This widespread genus ranged from East Africa to southern Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Deinotherium primarily browsed on leaves and likely went extinct due to environmental changes, such as the transition from forests to open grasslands during the late Neogene. They survived the longest in Africa, persisting into the early Pleistocene.
