Semmelweis University, Hungary's oldest continuously operating medical training institution, traces its origins back over 250 years to 1769 when Maria Theresa established a medical faculty at the University of Nagyszombat. Designed by Gerard van Swieten, the queen's court physician, the new faculty began operation in 1770 with five departments, adding pharmacist training in 1772. After relocations and expansions, it gained international recognition despite challenges such as overcrowding and wartime disruptions. Renamed in honor of Ignác Semmelweis in 1969, it merged with other institutions in 2000 to form today's Semmelweis University.
