Established in 1975, Kiskunság National Park is Hungary's second national park, located in the Danube-Tisza Interfluve region. It now comprises nine units covering 50,523 hectares, with the primary goal of preserving the unique landscape, natural values, geological formations, and waters of the region, as well as promoting scientific research and education.
The park includes three landscape protection areas and 18 nature reserves. Approximately 180,000 hectares of Natura 2000 areas overlap with the park and other protected regions, conserving habitats and species of European significance. The "sand ridge" area continues to evolve with wind-blown sand dunes and diverse vegetation. The region features a variety of habitats, including floodplain forests, sandy grasslands, juniper-poplar forests, and saline lakes. Recognized for its natural values, two-thirds of the park became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1979, and areas such as Upper Kiskunság Lakes and Puszta are protected under the Ramsar Convention for wetlands.
