Obverse

Depicts an illustration of a classic move in an épée fencing bout. Inside the beaded border on edge, the inscription "FENCING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS" is at the top, while at the bottom, between two horizontal lines, is the inscription "HUNGARY", with the year of issue, "2019," below it.

The épée (French: [epe]; lit. "sword"), also spelled epee in English, is the largest and heaviest of the three fencing weapons. It evolved from the 19th-century épée de combat, which in turn came from the French small sword. As a thrusting weapon, similar to the foil but with a stiffer blade, the épée has a triangular cross-section with a V-shaped groove called a fuller. It features a larger bell guard to protect the user’s arm and weighs more than the foil and sabre, making it the slowest fencing form. Unlike foil and sabre, épée fencing has no rules about priority or right of way, making immediate counterattacks common. The entire body is a valid target area.
