Description

The University of Szeged's history dates back to 1581 when Stephen Báthory founded an academy with humanities and theology faculties within the Jesuit College in Kolozsvár. In 1774, Maria Theresa reorganized the university, adding the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medicine by the end of the century.

Due to historical upheaval in 1919, the university was relocated from Kolozsvár to Szeged, designated by the Hungarian National Assembly in 1921. Count Kunó Klebelsberg, former Minister of Culture, significantly contributed to its establishment in Szeged. In 1937, Professor Albert Szent-Györgyi from Szeged's Institute of Medical Chemistry received the Nobel Prize for his research.

In 1951, the Faculty of Medicine became an independent, prestigious medical university. Since 1985, the University of Szeged has launched numerous foreign language programs, attracting international students. In 2009, it received the Higher Education Quality Award. The central building was renovated in 2011, providing a modern environment. Today, the University of Szeged operates with 12 faculties, offering cutting-edge scientific knowledge and practical application to students.
