The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, originally scheduled for 2020, were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but retained the "Tokyo 2020" branding. The Olympics took place from 23 July to 8 August 2021, and the Paralympics from 24 August to 5 September 2021. This marked Tokyo's second time hosting the Summer Olympics and Paralympics, having first done so in 1964, making it the first city in Asia to host the Summer Olympics twice. The Games introduced new competitions, including 3x3 basketball, freestyle BMX, Madison cycling, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding. Baseball and softball also returned after being removed from the programme in 2008.
The Paralympics featured 539 events across 22 sports, with badminton and taekwondo debuting. The Games were held mostly without spectators due to the state of emergency in Tokyo. China topped the Paralympic medal table with 96 golds, followed by Great Britain and the United States. Both events showcased resilience and adaptability in the face of the pandemic, emphasizing the global spirit of sportsmanship and competition.
