The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) is one of Central Europe's and Hungary's most prestigious technical universities. Founded in 1782 as the Royal Joseph Technical University by Emperor Joseph II, it is one of the world's first technical universities. Initially focused on engineering to meet the industrial needs of the Habsburg Empire, it was renamed the Technical University of Budapest in 1920 and later BME. Despite challenges during the world wars and under communist rule, it continued to contribute to technological advancements.
In the 1990s, BME expanded its academic scope, establishing the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Natural Sciences in 1998. Today, it boasts eight faculties and over 24,000 students, making it one of Hungary's largest universities. BME excels in engineering, technology, and innovation, attracting students and researchers worldwide and maintaining a significant role in advancing various fields.
