Description

mRNA-based vaccines have played a critical role in combating the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic that began in 2020. Developed through extensive collaboration, these vaccines have been key in reducing COVID-19 infections. Notably, Hungarian scientists Katalin Karikó and Norbert Pardi made significant contributions; Karikó ensured the safe delivery of mRNA molecules, while Pardi's work on lipid encapsulation stabilized mRNA for effective cellular delivery. This research has shown that synthetic mRNA encoding viral proteins can protect against various viral infections by triggering the immune system to produce antibodies. The success of these vaccines paves the way for future mRNA-based vaccines against pathogens like influenza, herpesvirus, and HIV, and opens new applications in gene editing and cancer treatment.

In recognition of these achievements, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued HUF 15,000 silver and HUF 3,000 non-ferrous metal commemorative coins titled "Hungarian Invention Serving as the Basis of mRNA-based Vaccines".

Obverse

Depicts a nucleoside-modified mRNA lipid nanoparticle, with enlarged mRNA spirals to the left. At the bottom, the inscription "NUCLEOSIDE-MODIFIED mRNA LIPID NANOPARTICLE" is visible. Below the inscription is a stylized depiction of an mRNA spiral, with the engraver's privy mark placed underneath. Around the edge of the reverse side, separated by dots and following the clockwise direction, are the names of scientists who played a significant role in the research of mRNA-based vaccines: "KATALIN KARIKÓ ," "IAN MACLACHLAN," "PARDI NORBERT," and "DREW WEISSMAN."
