Description

Three hundred years ago, in 1723, Hungarian King Charles III (1711-1740) ratified the laws of the Pozsony Diet, establishing a fixed jurisdiction and a permanent supreme court. This judicial reform led to the creation of the Hungarian Royal Court in Pest, comprising the Seven-Person Panel and the Royal Panel, marking the foundation of the Curia, despite the Hungarian judiciary's roots dating back to the 11th century.

According to Section 24 of Act CLXI of 2011, the Curia handles appeals against tribunal and appellate court decisions, reviews requests, issues binding judicial uniformity decisions, analyzes case law, publishes fundamental court decisions, and rules on local government ordinance conflicts and legislative failures.

Originally located at the corner of Curia Street and Snake Square in Pest, the Curia moved to this building in 1771 by decree of Maria Theresa. The building was demolished during downtown redevelopment. In 1911, a new building was constructed on Markó Street for the Ministry of Justice and later the Curia.

The building also houses a magnificent statue of Lady Justice by Alajos Stróbl, originally located in the Kossuth Square Justice Palace and moved here in 1983.

Engraver: Gábor Veres
