Description

Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya (1868–1957) was a Hungarian admiral and statesman, who served as Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary between World Wars I and II and throughout most of World War II, from 1 March 1920 to 15 October 1944.

Engraver: Lajos Berán

Obverse

Depicts the portrait of Francis II Rákóczi facing right. A bead-like border runs along the edge. Above the portrait, the inscriptions "Francis II Rákóczi" and the birth and death years "1676-1735" are visible. Below the portrait, the engraver's privy mark is placed.

Francis II Rákóczi (Hungarian: II. Rákóczi Ferenc) was a Hungarian nobleman and leader of the War of Independence against the Habsburgs from 1703 to 1711. He held the title of prince and led the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary. Also serving as Prince of Transylvania and an Imperial Prince, he was esteemed as a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Widely revered as a national hero in Hungary, his name is spelled variably across different languages.

Despite being offered the royal crown by the Hungarian parliament, Rákóczi declined, instead opting for the title of "Ruling Prince of Hungary" during the anti-Habsburg independence struggle. This choice signaled that his aim was not personal ambition but the liberation of Hungary from Habsburg rule.

Reverse

Depicts Hungary's small coat of arms with a crown. The coat of arms is illustrated in a shield shape, surrounded by a floral wreath that extends up to the lower edge of the Holy Crown placed atop the coat of arms. Below the coat of arms, above the lowest floral design, the mint mark "BP." is positioned, aligned with the lower edges of the coat of arms. Beneath the floral design, the issuance year is displayed, also split into two parts to align with the floral pattern. The upper inscription of the coin, - separated by dots between two floral designs - reads "HUNGARIAN KINGDOM," and the lower part, also between two dots, displays the denomination "2 PENGŐ."

The Holy Crown of Hungary (also known as the Crown of Saint Stephen) was the coronation crown used by the Kingdom of Hungary for most of its existence; kings have been crowned with it since the twelfth century. No king of Hungary was regarded as having been truly legitimate without being crowned with it. In the history of Hungary, more than fifty kings were crowned with it, up to the last, Charles IV, in 1916. The cross is attached to the crown in a rough manner, rising from the midriff of Christ in the central enamel plaque at the top of the crown. The cross was knocked crooked in the 17th century when the crown was damaged, possibly by the top of the iron chest housing the insignia being hastily closed without the crown having been placed in it properly. The cross has since been left in this slanted position, and is now always depicted as such.
