Description

Pakistan and the United States established diplomatic relations on August 15, 1947, a day after Pakistan's independence, with the U.S. being one of the first countries to recognize the new nation. This relationship has been a "roller coaster," featuring periods of close cooperation and deep bilateral estrangement. Despite a troubled history, the Pakistani military has played a significant role in American geopolitical strategy and has been a major non-NATO ally since 2002. Following Pakistan's involvement in the Afghan peace process and the Taliban's takeover in Afghanistan in 2021, many U.S. policymakers are reassessing relations with Pakistan. Meanwhile, the growing strategic partnership between the United States and India is adding pressure on Pakistani diplomacy.

Obverse

Depicts the Great Seal of the United States, the independence year of the USA below the seal enclosed by the country name above and inscription below.

The Great Seal of the United States features a bald eagle with outstretched wings, holding 13 arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right talon. The arrows represent the original 13 states, while the olive branch symbolizes the nation's desire for peace, with the eagle's head turned towards it to indicate a preference for peace.

This seal is a key national symbol, referring both to the physical seal kept by the U.S. Secretary and the design on it, which serves as the national coat of arms. The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress, formally severed the political ties between the 13 American colonies and Great Britain, outlining their reasons for seeking independence.

The Emblem of Pakistan, adopted in 1954, symbolizes the country's ideological foundation, economic basis, cultural heritage, and guiding principles. It consists of a crescent and star crest above a shield, surrounded by a wreath, with a scroll below. The green color and crest are traditional Islamic symbols. The shield is quartered to depict cotton, wheat, tea, and jute, signifying Pakistan's major crops at independence and its agricultural foundation. The floral wreath features Jasminum officinale, the national flower, reflecting traditional Mughal art and Pakistan's cultural heritage. The scroll bears the national motto in Urdu, "Īmān, Ittiḥād, Naẓm" (ایمان، اتحاد، نظم), translating to "Faith, Unity, Discipline," which serve as Pakistan's guiding principles. Designed by Maraj Muhammad, a student of the National College of Arts, this emblem encapsulates the essence of Pakistan's identity and aspirations.
