Description

The Comoros is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, situated at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel between northeastern Mozambique, the French region of Mayotte, and northwestern Madagascar. Its capital and largest city is Moroni. The Comoros became part of the French colonial empire in the late 19th century and gained independence in 1975. Since then, it has experienced over 20 coups d'état or attempted coups, with several heads of state being assassinated.

The Central Bank of the Comoros was established in 1981, marking the country's transition to greater financial autonomy following independence from France in 1975. Initially, the Comoros Emission Institute managed the currency, but as the nation stabilized, a dedicated central bank was deemed necessary to foster economic development and stability. By 2011, the Central Bank celebrated its 30th anniversary, reflecting on three decades of managing monetary policy, issuing currency, and supporting the economic infrastructure of the island nation. Despite the country's turbulent political history, the Central Bank has played a crucial role in maintaining financial stability and promoting growth.
