Description

Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, is often identified with Nathanael from the Gospel of John. His name, derived from Aramaic, means "son of Talmai." Bartholomew is mentioned in the Synoptic Gospels and Acts. Tradition holds that he preached in India, Mesopotamia, Parthia, and Armenia, where he is believed to have been martyred. Accounts of his death vary, with some saying he was crucified, beheaded, or skinned alive. He is venerated in various Christian traditions, including the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Armenian Apostolic Churches.

Obverse

Depicts Pope Francis's crowned coat of arms surrounded by the inscriptions "Pope Francis" and "By having mercy and by choosing" below. The dates "Year 12" and "2024" (XII - 12 and MMXXIV - 2024 in Roman numerals) are below.

The coat of arms features three symbols on a blue field. At the top is the emblem of the Society of Jesus, reflecting Francis' Jesuit background. This emblem includes a radiant sun with the IHS christogram. Below are an eight-pointed star, symbolizing the Virgin Mary, and a spikenard representing Saint Joseph. Francis uniquely retained his personal motto, "Miserando atque eligendo" (Latin for "by having mercy, by choosing him"), from Saint Bede's 21st homily on the Gospel of Matthew.

The papal tiara, a crown worn by popes from the 8th century until the mid-20th century, was last used by Pope Paul VI in 1963. From 1143 to 1963, it was used during papal coronations. The remaining tiaras are all of the triple form, with the oldest dating from 1572.

Reverse

Depicts the Apostle with his hands folded and looking downwards. Beside the Gospel is a knife. To the left, there is a depiction of skin bearing the features of his suffering face. Above the depiction, the name of the state is inscribed, while the denomination and the mintmark of the Italian State Mint and Polygraphic Institute (R) are placed to the right and below. On the right edge, you'll find the engraver's and sculptor's marks.

Bartholomew's missionary work extended to India, as noted by Eusebius and Jerome, who mention his leaving a copy of the Gospel of Matthew there. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Armenia with Saint Jude and is thus a patron saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Relics associated with Bartholomew are found in Benevento and Rome. He is often depicted in art holding his flayed skin and a knife, symbolizing his martyrdom.
