Peter Orseolo, also known as Peter the Venetian (Hungarian: Velencei Péter; 1010 or 1011 – 1046, or late 1050s), was twice King of Hungary. He first ascended the throne in 1038, succeeding his uncle, King Stephen I. His preference for foreign courtiers led to an uprising and his deposition in 1041. Peter was restored to the throne in 1044 by Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor, and accepted the Emperor's suzerainty. His second reign ended in 1046 after a pagan uprising. Hungarian chronicles consistently state that Peter was executed by order of his successor, Andrew I. However, a reference by the chronicler Cosmas of Prague to Peter's alleged marriage around 1055 suggests he may have survived his second deposition.
