Description

Commemoration Day, formerly known as Martyrs' Day, is a national holiday in the United Arab Emirates honoring the sacrifices and dedication of Emirati martyrs who have given their lives in civil, military, and humanitarian service. The day is officially observed on November 30th, with a public holiday on December 1st. It was established in 2015 by the late His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the country. Prior to 2019, both the observance and public holiday took place on November 30th.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (1948–2022), the UAE's second president and ruler of Abu Dhabi from November 2004 to May 2022, was the eldest son of the UAE's first president, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He took on a significant role in the late 1990s due to his father's health issues and officially became Abu Dhabi's leader in 2004. His tenure saw cultural and academic growth, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways. Under his leadership, the UAE became a major economic power. Known for his pro-Western stance, he strengthened ties with the US and Israel.

The emblem of the United Arab Emirates was officially adopted on December 9, 1973, and modified in 2008. It features a golden falcon (Hawk of Quraish) with a central disk displaying the UAE flag and seven stars, representing the federation's seven emirates. The falcon's seven tail feathers also symbolize the emirates. The falcon grasps a red parchment with the federation's name in Kufic script and a flag of the United Arab Emirates on its chest.

The main theme of the flag's four colors is the sovereignty and unity of the Arab states.
