Description

The Sharjah Mosque is the largest mosque in the Emirate of Sharjah, UAE. Beyond serving Muslims, the mosque features a library and an area for Dawah to non-Muslims. Construction began in 2014, costing around 300 million dirhams, and it was inaugurated on 10 May 2019 by the Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi. The mosque can accommodate up to 25,000 worshipers, with an indoor capacity of over 5,000 people, including 610 women. The front hall and side lobbies can hold more than 6,000 worshipers, while the outdoor area can accommodate 13,500.

To commemorate the occasion, the Central Bank of the UAE issued two coins, one gold and one silver, each inscribed with a verse from the Quran, designed by the Sharjah Islamic Bank.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (1948–2022), the UAE's second president and ruler of Abu Dhabi from November 2004 to May 2022, was the eldest son of the UAE's first president, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He took on a significant role in the late 1990s due to his father's health issues and officially became Abu Dhabi's leader in 2004. His tenure saw cultural and academic growth, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways. Under his leadership, the UAE became a major economic power. Known for his pro-Western stance, he strengthened ties with the US and Israel.
