Description

At its fifteenth session, the Committee on Fisheries reviewed the FAO's work in fisheries and served as the technical phase of the FAO World Conference on Fisheries Management and Development. In preparation for the 1984 policy phase, the Committee analyzed key issues in fisheries management and development, forming the basis for recommendations on guidelines and principles for a Strategy for Fisheries Management and Development. It approved five Action Programmes for submission: fisheries planning and management, development of small-scale fisheries, aquaculture, trade in fish and fisheries products, and promoting fisheries' role in alleviating undernutrition. The Committee suggested steps for finalizing the draft Strategy and Action Programmes and supported the proposed fisheries programme budget for 1984-85, recommending the continuation of the Special Programme of Assistance to Developing Countries. It also recommended updates to the FAO/UNEP Draft Global Plan of Action for Marine Mammals.
