The flag of Seychelles (French: Drapeau des Seychelles) was adopted on January 8, 1996, and is the third flag since the country gained independence from the United Kingdom on June 29, 1976. The colors represent the Seychelles People's United Party and the Seychelles Democratic Party. The original flag, adopted at independence, had blue and red triangles and resembled the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company's flag. In 1977, after President James Mancham was overthrown, a new flag with red, white, and green stripes and a wavy white line was introduced, similar to the Seychelles People's United Party flag but without the sun. When the party lost the majority, other parties pushed for a change, leading to the current flag's approval.
