Description

A millennium is a period of 1,000 years, often used for periods beginning at a calendar's start point or multiples of a thousand years after. The term, derived from Latin "mille" (thousand) and "annus" (year), can also refer to any thousand-year interval. Leading up to the year 2000, there was debate over when the new millennium truly began—whether with the year 2000 or 2001. While some argued for the latter, based on the absence of a year 0, popular culture favored celebrating with the turn from 1999 to 2000, driven by the "odometer effect" and media interest.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms of Seychelles, country name above, date below. Mint mark below left.

The coat of arms of the Republic of Seychelles shows a shield, in which a giant tortoise is located on grounds. On the ground there is a coco de mer palm tree. Behind it there is a sea with two islands and a sail ship to be seen. The shield is enthroned by a helmet, on which a white-tailed tropicbird is located above waves. The shield is supported by two white sailfish. Beneath the shield the motto of Seychelles is stated: "Finis Coronat Opus" (Latin for "The End Crowns the Work").

Reverse

Depicts symbols of time and direction: the upper part shows a clock with a single large hand and a candle inside, while the lower part displays a compass with the year "2000" on the left. A visual effect causes the year "1999" to change to "2000" when the coin is tilted from side to side.
