Tilapia are a diverse group of cichlid fish, with nearly a hundred species found primarily in freshwater environments like streams, ponds, rivers, and lakes, though some also inhabit brackish water. Important economically and culturally, especially in Africa and the Philippines, tilapia are valued for their mild taste and affordability. They have been integral to artisanal fishing and increasingly to aquaculture. The name "tilapia" derives from the Tswana word for fish, "tlhapi," or from Greek roots meaning "distant fish." Historically, tilapia were significant in Ancient Egypt and Talmudic times, symbolizing rebirth and appearing in biblical narratives. Tilapia are known for their laterally compressed bodies, efficient feeding structures, and adaptability to various environments, including extreme conditions like the Salton Sea. They are also mouth-brooders, carrying fertilized eggs and young fish in their mouths.
