Description

The "35 Years of German Unity" 2-euro commemorative coin marks a significant milestone, as 2025 celebrates the 35th anniversary of Germany's reunification. On October 3, 1990, the historic reunification took place, fulfilling the mandate of the Basic Law, which called upon the German people to restore the unity and freedom of their nation.

This commemorative coin not only celebrates the reunification but also signifies the launch of a new series, "Unity and Justice and Freedom." Each year, starting with this release, a 2-euro coin will be issued to honor key politicians who have significantly influenced the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. This series will pay tribute to individuals who contributed to Germany's post-war recovery, its path to democracy, and its reintegration into the global community.

The unification of Germany was a pivotal event in European history, ending over four decades of division between East and West Germany. It symbolized the triumph of democracy over dictatorship and the peaceful collapse of the Iron Curtain, with implications far beyond Germany's borders. The reunification continues to shape Germany's identity and its role as a leading democratic state in Europe today.

Obverse

Depicts a typographic composition centered along a longitudinal axis, slightly shifted to the left. On the left side, aligned to the right, are the words WIR SIND EIN VOLK (We are one people), while on the right side, aligned to the left, it reads 35 JAHRE DEUTSCHE EINHEIT (35 years of German unity). Both text blocks are slightly offset along the central axis and are framed by horizontal lines at the top and bottom. The two sections are visually connected by an enlarged "D" in the middle, symbolizing the unity of Germans from East and West, held together by the shared "D" for 35 years. The deliberate compositional shift between the text blocks highlights the historical division between East and West Germany and their unification, while the open lines evoke the image of the once-dividing wall.

In the inner part of the coin, the initials of the artist Thomas Serres from Hattingen ("TS") appear at the top, with the mint mark of the respective mint (“A,” “D,” “F,” “G,” or “J”) just below. The bottom section displays the year of issue, “2025,” with the country code “D” for Germany positioned above it. The outer ring of the coin is decorated with the 12 stars of the European Union flag, symbolizing Germany's place within Europe.

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
