Description

Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi (1807–1882) was an Italian general and revolutionary who played a crucial role in the unification of Italy, known as the Risorgimento. Regarded as one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland," he earned the title "Hero of the Two Worlds" for his military campaigns in both South America and Europe. Initially a follower of nationalist Giuseppe Mazzini and the Young Italy movement, Garibaldi later allied with the monarchist Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, subordinating his republican ideals to support Italian nationalism until the country's unification.

Returning to Italy in 1848, Garibaldi commanded forces that contributed to the military campaigns leading to unification. He achieved significant victories, such as capturing major cities in Lombardy during the 1859 war and leading the successful Expedition of the Thousand in 1860, which resulted in the annexation of Sicily and Southern Italy to the Kingdom of Sardinia. Celebrated as Italy's greatest national hero, Garibaldi inspired figures like Jawaharlal Nehru and Che Guevara, and his legacy remains a symbol of independence and republican ideals worldwide. His volunteers, known as the Garibaldini, famously wore red shirts, further cementing his iconic status in history.

Malawi's coat of arms is based on Nyasaland's earlier heraldic arms. It features a shield supported by a lion and a leopard, standing on a representation of Mount Mulanje. The shield is divided into three parts: wavy lines symbolizing water, a central stripe with a lion representing strength, and a rising sun, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. Above the shield is a fish eagle in front of a rising sun, symbolizing freedom. The scroll below the shield bears the national motto, "Unity and Freedom," reflecting Malawi's goals of harmony and independence.

The meeting between Giuseppe Garibaldi and King Victor Emmanuel II on the bridge of Teano on 26 October 1860 marked a pivotal moment in the unification of Italy. After leading the successful Expedition of the Thousand, which resulted in the conquest of Sicily and Southern Italy, Garibaldi handed over control of the newly liberated territories to the monarch. This encounter symbolized Garibaldi’s decision to prioritize national unity over his republican ideals, as he recognized Victor Emmanuel II as the leader of the new Italian state. The meeting solidified the bond between the revolutionary and the monarch, paving the way for the official proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Victor Emmanuel II (Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso; 14 March 1820 – 9 January 1878) was King of Sardinia from 1849 until 17 March 1861, when he assumed the title King of Italy to become the first king of a united Italy since the 6th century, a title he held until his death in 1878. The Italians gave him the epithet Father of the Fatherland (Italian: Padre della Patria).
