Description

The Bietschhorn (3,934 m) is a mountain in the canton of Wallis, located south of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. Its northeast and southern slopes are part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, which includes the Jungfrau and the Aletsch Glacier. Situated on the south side of the Lötschental valley, it forms part of the UNESCO region at the north end of the Bietschtal and Baltschiedertal valleys. Climbers typically start from the Bietschhornhütte or the Baltschiederklause. The mountain was first climbed on August 13, 1859, by Leslie Stephen and guides Anton Siegen, Johann Siegen, and Joseph Ebener.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms of Malawi dividing the date, country name above and denomination below.

Malawi's coat of arms is based on Nyasaland's earlier heraldic arms. It features a shield supported by a lion and a leopard, standing on a representation of Mount Mulanje. The shield is divided into three parts: wavy lines symbolizing water, a central stripe with a lion representing strength, and a rising sun, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. Above the shield is a fish eagle in front of a rising sun, symbolizing freedom. The scroll below the shield bears the national motto, "Unity and Freedom," reflecting Malawi's goals of harmony and independence.

The Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage area starts at the foot of the renowned Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains in the Bernese Oberland. At its heart is the Aletsch region with the Aletsch Glacier. To the east, it extends to the Lauteraarhorn, Finsteraarhorn (the highest peak at 4,273 m), Oberaarhorn, and Grimsel Pass. To the west, it includes parts of the Kandertal and Lötschental valleys, the Blüemlisalp group, the Bietschhorn, and nearby valleys. This region of the Bernese Alps is home to rare animal and plant species and could be used for reintroduction efforts, such as the bearded vulture.
