Description

The Chinese zodiac is a twelve-year cycle that assigns an animal and its traits to each year, based on the Chinese calendar. It plays a significant role in Chinese culture, reflecting traditional philosophy and beliefs. People often associate their personality with their zodiac animal. Originating in China, this zodiac system remains popular in East and Southeast Asia, including Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. While similar to the Western zodiac, the Chinese version focuses on years rather than months and is believed to influence personality, relationships, and fortune. The zodiac year can start on Chinese New Year or the Start of Spring.

Current naming conventions for lunar months use numbers, though they were originally named after natural phenomena. Each month is linked to one of the twelve Earthly Branches, but correspondences with Gregorian dates are only approximate. Intercalary months are common in many years.

While the numbered months often align with Gregorian months, they are not directly interchangeable. For example, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, and other festivals, like the Double Ninth, Lantern, and Qixi festivals, occur on the 9th, 15th, and 7th days of their respective lunar months.
