Obverse

Depicts an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid grass, symbolizing strength and authority. Above the lion is the country’s name in French, and the date of issue is placed below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.

The African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf or Cape hunting dog (Lycaon pictus), is a highly social and endangered carnivore native to sub-Saharan Africa. Known for its unique, mottled coat of black, brown, white, and yellow fur, it lives and hunts in packs, exhibiting remarkable coordination and stamina while chasing prey, often covering vast distances. These dogs are skilled hunters, primarily targeting medium-sized ungulates like impalas, using their agility and endurance to exhaust their quarry. Unlike other canids, African wild dogs have only four toes per foot, and their social structure revolves around a strong pack hierarchy, with close cooperation in raising young and sharing food. Unfortunately, they face threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and disease, leading to a significant decline in their population.
