Obverse

Depicts an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid the grass, symbolizing strength and authority. Above the lion is the country’s name in French, and the date of issue is placed below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.

Giraffes are the tallest land animals, native to the savannas and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. Recognizable by their long necks, spotted coats, and graceful stance, giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) can reach heights of up to 18 feet, with necks alone stretching up to six feet. These gentle herbivores primarily browse on leaves, especially from acacia trees, and their height and specialized tongue allow them to access food that other animals can't reach. Giraffes live in loose, social groups, often traveling together in search of food. Unfortunately, giraffe populations have been declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict, making conservation efforts increasingly crucial.
