In 1979, Pope John Paul II made significant pastoral visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo (then known as Zaire) as part of his global mission to strengthen the Catholic faith and promote peace and human dignity.
In May 1980, during his visit to Zaire, the Pope addressed the importance of unity and reconciliation in a country that was under the authoritarian rule of Mobutu Sese Seko. He spoke to large crowds, emphasizing social justice, peace, and the role of the Church in advocating for the oppressed. His visit was seen as a message of hope amid political and social challenges in Zaire at the time.
