Baudouin, King of the Belgians (1930-1993), reigned from 1951 until his death and is remembered for his dedication to unity and moral leadership. Taking the throne at the young age of 21, he guided Belgium through social and political upheaval, working to bridge divides in a country often challenged by tensions between its Flemish- and French-speaking communities. Known for his personal integrity and devout Catholic faith, Baudouin took a conscientious approach to his role, even temporarily abdicating in 1990 to avoid approving a controversial abortion law due to his beliefs. His reign also included efforts to reconcile Belgium’s colonial past in Congo and to advocate for humanitarian causes. Upon his sudden death in 1993, Baudouin was deeply mourned, with Belgians remembering him as a compassionate and stabilizing figure in their national history.
