Description

Kofi Atta Annan (1938–2018) was a Ghanaian diplomat and the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, serving from 1997 to 2006. As the first person from sub-Saharan Africa to lead the organization, Annan played a pivotal role in modernizing the UN and advocating for human rights, poverty alleviation, and peace. His tenure saw initiatives addressing global issues, including HIV/AIDS, conflicts in Africa and the Middle East, and UN reform. In 2001, he and the United Nations jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to build a more peaceful and organized world. After leaving the UN, Annan continued his work in global diplomacy through the Kofi Annan Foundation, addressing conflict resolution, sustainable development, and good governance.

Obverse

Depicts an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid grass, symbolizing strength and authority. Above the lion is the country’s name in French, and the denomination is placed below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.

The emblem of the United Nations Organization depicts a map of the world representing an azimuthal equidistant projection centred on the North Pole, inscribed in a wreath consisting of crossed conventionalized branches of the olive tree. The projection of the map extends to 60 degrees south latitude, and includes five concentric circles. The olive branches are a symbol for peace, and the world map represents all the people and the countries of the world.
