Description

In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI made a significant visit to his homeland, Germany, just a few months after his election as pope. This trip marked his first international journey as the head of the Catholic Church. He attended World Youth Day in Cologne, an event that brought together young Catholics from around the world and highlighted Benedict’s dedication to engaging with the youth. During his time in Germany, he visited important religious sites, including the Cologne Cathedral, and delivered messages focusing on faith, peace, and unity. This visit held deep personal significance for Benedict, reaffirming his strong ties to his native country and providing an opportunity to connect with the global Catholic community.

Depicts an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid the grass, symbolizing strength and authority. Above the lion is the country’s name in French, and the denomination of the issue is placed below all within a beaded circle.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.

Pope Benedict XVI (1927–2022), born Joseph Ratzinger, served as Pope of the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013. A respected theologian and scholar, he had a profound influence on Catholic teachings, emphasizing traditional values and addressing complex issues such as secularism, moral relativism, and interfaith dialogue. Known for his intellectual depth and conservative approach, Benedict sought to strengthen the Church’s doctrine while preserving its heritage. His resignation in 2013 marked him as the first pope in nearly 600 years to step down, citing declining health and energy, allowing his successor, Pope Francis, to assume the papacy. Benedict spent his remaining years in quiet reflection and study at the Vatican.

Berlin Cathedral, or Berliner Dom, is an iconic Protestant cathedral located on Museum Island in central Berlin. Completed in 1905, it is one of the most significant landmarks in Germany's capital, showcasing Neo-Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles. The cathedral was originally built as a royal church for the German monarchy, and its design reflects the grandeur of the German Empire. Severely damaged during World War II, it underwent extensive restoration, reopening in the 1990s. Today, Berlin Cathedral remains an active place of worship and a popular tourist attraction, renowned for its stunning dome, intricate mosaics, and panoramic views of the city from its observation deck.
