Description

The Eurasian hoopoe (Upupa epops) is a unique bird, recognized for its vivid plumage and distinctive "crown" of feathers, which can fan out when the bird is excited or displaying. Its striking black-and-white striped wings and pinkish-brown body make it instantly identifiable in its natural habitats across Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. Known for its long, slender, slightly curved beak, the hoopoe uses this feature to forage for insects, which form the main part of its diet. Its call, a soft "oop-oop-oop," adds to its charm, making it one of the most iconic birds in its range.

Obverse

Depicts a diamond-point engraving Eurasian hoopoe, its scientific name at the right of it, denomination below the animal, an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid the grass, symbolizing strength and authority, country’s name in French as semi-circle below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.
