Description

The scarce swallowtail, Iphiclides podalirius, is a striking butterfly found throughout Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa. Known for its elegant, elongated wings with bold black stripes against a creamy white background, this butterfly resembles a tiger pattern, giving it the nickname "tiger swallowtail." The species thrives in open woodlands, meadows, and gardens, where its caterpillars feed on plants such as blackthorn and hawthorn. Although widely distributed, its numbers are limited in some areas, making sightings particularly special. Its beauty and rarity make it a cherished species among butterfly enthusiasts and conservationists alike.

Obverse

Depicts a diamond-point engraving scarce swallowtail butterfly, its scientific name below it, an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid the grass, symbolizing strength and authority, the denomination at the right of it, country’s name in French as semi-circle below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.
