Description

The Terracotta Army, a vast collection of clay soldiers, horses, and chariots, was buried alongside China's first Emperor, Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BCE), to accompany him into the afterlife. Discovered in 1974 by local farmers near Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, this archaeological marvel consists of thousands of life-sized figures, each unique in facial features, expressions, and attire, reflecting the military formations of ancient Chinese armies. The soldiers are organized according to rank and role, ranging from archers and cavalrymen to generals, and are believed to represent the emperor's real military forces. The level of craftsmanship is extraordinary, with intricate detailing in weaponry, armor, and even hairstyles, providing a glimpse into the cultural and technological sophistication of the Qin Dynasty.

Beyond its artistic and historical significance, the Terracotta Army symbolizes Emperor Qin Shi Huang's quest for immortality and his desire to protect his reign after death. The army lies within the emperor's elaborate tomb complex, which ancient writings describe as a grand underground palace surrounded by rivers of mercury. Although the main burial chamber has yet to be excavated, the Terracotta Army has become a world-renowned cultural treasure, attracting millions of visitors and offering invaluable insights into ancient Chinese history, warfare, and beliefs regarding the afterlife.

Obverse

Depicts an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid the grass, symbolizing strength and authority. Above the lion is the country’s name in French, and the denomination is placed below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.

Depicts a terracotta general standing beside a kneeling Chinese warrior, with formations of infantry holding lances, cavalry archers, and other soldiers in the background. The date appears below the figures.

These life-sized terracotta soldiers range from approximately 175 cm (5.7 ft) to 200 cm (6.6 ft), with officers typically taller. Each figure's uniform, height, and hairstyle reflect their rank, and while each face is unique, scholars have identified around 10 base facial templates further individualized to create distinct features. The figures include types such as armored and unarmored infantry, cavalrymen with pillbox hats, helmeted chariot drivers, spear-carrying charioteers, kneeling and standing archers, and generals. Variation within ranks includes details like shin pads, padded trousers, and rank-specific armor. Terracotta horses also appear within the formations, adding to the army's detailed military realism.
