Description

September 11, 2001 (9/11), marks one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in modern history. On this day, al-Qaeda, a militant Islamist group led by Osama bin Laden, carried out coordinated attacks against the United States. Nineteen hijackers seized four commercial planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, causing their collapse, and one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was thwarted by passengers and crashed in a Pennsylvania field before reaching its intended target.

The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and caused extensive physical and emotional devastation. In response, the U.S. launched the War on Terror, including military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. The event reshaped global security policies, spurred widespread changes in counterterrorism strategies, and remains a somber day of remembrance for lives lost and the resilience of those affected.

Obverse

Depicts an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid the grass, symbolizing strength and authority. Above the lion is the country’s name in French, and the denomination and date of issue are placed below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.

Reverse

Depicts the World Trade Center Twin. The tower on the left, with the antenna spire, was 1 WTC. The tower on the right was 2 WTC. All seven buildings of the WTC complex are partially visible, with the inscription of the event above alongside the rim.

The World Trade Center (WTC) was a complex of seven buildings in Lower Manhattan, New York City, dominated by the iconic Twin Towers. Designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki and completed in 1973, the towers were engineering marvels, each standing at 1,368 feet (417 meters) and briefly holding the title of the tallest buildings in the world. The WTC symbolized global commerce and economic power, hosting businesses, government offices, and visitors from around the world.

On September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers were destroyed in a terrorist attack when two hijacked planes were flown into them, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths. The site, now known as Ground Zero, has since been rebuilt as a memorial and cultural hub, featuring the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower), and other buildings, commemorating those lost while signifying resilience and hope.
