The western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is the smallest and most widespread subspecies of gorilla, found in the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. These critically endangered primates are known for their intelligence, complex social structures, and herbivorous diet, primarily consisting of fruits, leaves, and stems. They live in groups led by a dominant silverback male, who protects and guides the group. Despite their adaptability, their population is under severe threat from habitat destruction, poaching, and diseases such as the Ebola virus.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the western lowland gorilla primarily inhabits remote and less accessible forests, such as those in the Salonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the DRC offers critical habitat for these gorillas, the country’s ongoing political instability, illegal logging, and poaching pose significant threats to their survival. Conservation efforts in the DRC, including anti-poaching patrols, protected areas, and community engagement programs, are vital to safeguarding this species in one of its last strongholds.
