Description

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) was a towering figure of the Italian Renaissance, celebrated for his unparalleled contributions to painting, sculpture, and architecture. Known for his mastery of the human form and emotional depth, his works remain some of the most iconic in Western art. As a painter, Michelangelo is perhaps best known for the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a monumental fresco that depicts scenes from the Book of Genesis, and The Last Judgment, a powerful portrayal of the apocalypse. His innovative use of perspective, anatomy, and dramatic composition revolutionized the art of his time and continues to inspire artists worldwide.

In addition to his achievements in painting, Michelangelo was an extraordinary sculptor and architect. His sculptures, such as David, Pietà, and Moses, showcase his ability to bring marble to life, capturing both physical perfection and profound emotion. As an architect, he played a crucial role in designing St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, including its iconic dome. Michelangelo's work reflects a deep understanding of human nature, spirituality, and the divine, cementing his legacy as one of history's greatest and most influential artists.

Obverse

Depicts Michelangelo's renowned black pencil drawing "Cleopatra." The issuing country, "SAN MARINO," is shown on the right side of the design, while the inscription "MICHELANGELO" and the "R" mintmark of the Rome Mint are placed on the left. The years "1475" and "2025" appear on either side of the image, and the initials "TP," representing the designer, are located at the bottom. The outer ring includes the twelve stars of the European flag.

Michelangelo's "Cleopatra", a black pencil drawing created in 1535, is a striking depiction of the Egyptian queen, showcasing Michelangelo's mastery of line and expression. The artwork portrays Cleopatra with a serpent coiled around her, a symbolic reference to her legendary death by snakebite. The intricate details of her facial features and the delicate interplay of light and shadow highlight Michelangelo’s ability to convey depth and emotion in a seemingly simple medium. This drawing, now housed in the Casa Buonarroti Foundation and Museum in Florence, reflects the artist's fascination with classical themes and his exceptional talent in capturing human drama and mythological symbolism.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
