The Coat of Arms of the Philippines features the eight-rayed sun of the Philippines with each ray representing the eight provinces (Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Manila, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Tarlac) which were placed under martial law by Governor-General Ramón Blanco during the Philippine Revolution, and the three five-pointed stars representing the three primary geographic regions of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

On the field on the dexter side is the American bald eagle of the United States, and on the field on the sinister side is the lion rampant of the coat of arms of Castile and León, both representing the country's colonial past.

José Rizal (1861–1896) was a Filipino nationalist, writer, and physician who became a central figure in the Philippine movement for independence from Spanish colonial rule. Born in Calamba, Laguna, he was a polymath proficient in multiple languages and disciplines. Rizal's novels, Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo, exposed the injustices of Spanish rule and inspired peaceful reform efforts. In 1892, he founded La Liga Filipina, a nonviolent reform society, but was soon exiled to Dapitan. Despite his advocacy for peaceful change, Rizal was arrested, tried for sedition, and executed by the Spanish colonial government in 1896. His martyrdom galvanized the nationalist movement, making him a revered hero in the Philippines.
