Obverse

The flag raising at Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945, is one of the most iconic moments of World War II, symbolizing the courage and determination of American forces. It occurred during the Battle of Iwo Jima, a pivotal conflict in the Pacific Theater, as six U.S. Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi after capturing the strategic high ground. Captured in a photograph by Joe Rosenthal, the image became a powerful representation of American unity and sacrifice. The moment inspired the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, honoring all Marines who have served their country.

The eagle represents the nation it serves, holding a ribbon in its beak inscribed with the Marine Corps motto, "Semper Fidelis" (Always Faithful). The globe signifies the Corps' worldwide presence and readiness, while the anchor reflects its naval traditions and close ties to the U.S. Navy. Together, these elements embody the Marine Corps' legacy of honor, courage, and commitment.
