Description

Since 1489, the Sovereign has been a symbol of the British monarchy for over five centuries. Introduced by Henry VII after the Battle of Bosworth, it was created as a "new money of gold" to reflect the wealth and authority of the Tudor dynasty, with a name embodying majesty and power.

In 2025, for the first time, The Royal Mint released a silver Proof edition of the Sovereign. Identical in diameter and weight to its original gold counterpart, the coin was issued in two versions: a standard strike and a special shield privy mark edition, celebrating 200 years since Jean Baptiste Merlen’s Royal Arms design first appeared on the Sovereign.

Reverse

Depicts St. George on horseback wielding a short sword, with the horse rearing to the right over a fallen dragon pierced by a broken lance; the date and artist's initials, B.P., appear in the exergue.

Saint George (c. 275–281 AD to 23 April 303) was a Roman soldier of Greek origin in Emperor Diocletian’s Guard, martyred for refusing to renounce his Christian faith.

According to legend, in Silene, Libya, a dragon poisoned the land from a nearby lake. To appease it, the townspeople sacrificed sheep and, later, children chosen by lottery. When the king’s daughter was selected, she was sent to the lake despite his pleas.

Saint George happened upon her and vowed to stay. When the dragon appeared, he wounded it with his lance, used her girdle to leash it, and led it to the town. George promised to slay the dragon if the people converted to Christianity. After 15,000, including the king, were baptized, he killed the dragon. A church was built on the site, and a spring with healing waters emerged from its altar.
