Description

The Louvre, located in the heart of Paris, is the world's largest and one of its most iconic art museums. Originally built as a fortress in the late 12th century, it later became a royal palace before transforming into a public museum in 1793. Home to over 35,000 works of art, the Louvre boasts an unparalleled collection spanning thousands of years, from ancient civilizations to the 19th century. Masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace draw millions of visitors annually. Its glass pyramid entrance, designed by I. M. Pei, has become a modern architectural symbol, blending innovation with history.

Obverse

The façade of the Louvre is depicted from the east side, seamlessly connected to the museum’s iconic labyrinth of extraordinary rooms. In the background, the Louvre Pyramid and its structure. The issue year appears on the left, with the monogram "RF" (French Republic) positioned above it. On the right, the mintmarks of the Paris Mint and the engraver Joaquin Jimenez are integrated into the museum's floor plan. The twelve stars of the European flag are shown on the outer ring of the coin.

The Louvre Pyramid, designed by architect I. M. Pei, is a striking glass and metal structure located at the entrance of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Completed in 1989, it stands as a modern architectural masterpiece that contrasts yet complements the historic grandeur of the museum. The pyramid serves as the main entrance, allowing natural light to illuminate the underground lobby, while its sleek geometric design creates a harmonious blend of contemporary and classical elements. The pyramid's symbolism of transparency and openness reflects the museum's commitment to accessibility, inviting visitors from around the world into its vast collection of art and history.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
