Description
According to the most popular version, the word "ruble" is derived from the Russian verb "rubit", meaning "to chop", to cut, to hack, as ruble was considered as a cutout piece of silver Gryvna.
Since the second quarter of 2009 the coin with denomination of 1 Ruble of 1997 (Y# 604) is made of nickel-plated steel (Y# 833a). The material of the coin has ferromagnetic characteristics. The design and dimensions of this coin correspond to 1 Ruble coin of 1997 with the variety of obverse of 2002. The coins which had been made previously of copper-nickel alloy (Y# 833) remain in circulation on the territory of the Russian Federation as a legal tender.
