Description

Sustainable development in Portugal focuses on balancing economic growth, environmental preservation, and social inclusion in alignment with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. The country has made significant strides in renewable energy, with a substantial portion of its electricity generated from wind, solar, and hydroelectric sources. Portugal has also invested in sustainable urban development, such as eco-friendly public transportation systems and green building initiatives. Socially, efforts are being directed toward reducing inequality and improving access to education and healthcare. Through policies and partnerships, Portugal continues to promote a sustainable future, aiming to protect its rich natural heritage, combat climate change, and foster an inclusive economy.

Obverse

Depicts the planet Earth at its center, surrounded by the inscription "Sustainable Development." Diagonally spanning from the bottom left to the top right is a branch-like pattern composed of 17 pairs of leaves arranged in triangular formations, symbolizing the universal recycling icon and representing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

The mint's name and the coin designer's name appear along the top right edge, while the bottom right showcases the national coat of arms, flanked by the issuing country and the year. Encircling the entire design on the outer ring are the twelve stars of the European Union.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. They aim to address global challenges and achieve a sustainable future for all by the year 2030. The goals are interconnected, balancing social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
