Obverse

Depicts Fortuna holding a horn of plenty, from which several four-leaf clovers spill out. In the background, the logo of the Belgian National Lottery is displayed alongside the lottery's name in French and Dutch, the country code (BE), the year of issuance, the mintmark, and the mint master's privy mark on the left, with the engraver's initials (IB) on the right. The outer ring is adorned with the 12 stars of the European flag.

Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune and luck, embodies the unpredictable nature of fate, representing both prosperity and adversity. Often depicted with a horn of plenty (cornucopia) overflowing with abundance, a wheel of fortune symbolizing life's constant changes, or a blindfold to show impartiality, Fortuna was a central figure in Roman mythology. Revered as a bringer of both good and bad fortune, she had temples dedicated to her across ancient Rome, emphasizing her significance in everyday life. Her image continues to symbolize fate, luck, and the capriciousness of life's outcomes in art and culture today.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
