Description

The federal government has decided to start the “Federal States II” series, in which a country is to be honoured each year by issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin with a striking landmark. The Federal Republic of Germany has 16 states (German: Bundesländer). The order of the states is based on the presidency of the Bundesrat. The new series focuses in particular on the cultural identity and regional characteristics of the individual countries. It thus follows on from the successful predecessor series "Federal States" (2006 - 2022), which expired in January 2022.

Obverse

Depicts Klimahaus Bremerhaven, an iconic symbol of scientific exploration and environmental education. The design captures the futuristic structure from a striking perspective below, merging its diverse architectural elements—the glass bridge, elliptical exhibition building, and towering structure—into a unified and dynamic maritime image. The ship-like contours of the building, two soaring seagulls, and a subtle hint of the harbor vividly highlight Bremen’s identity as a hub for science and maritime research.

The inner part of the coin also includes key inscriptions: “BREMEN” on the right, the country code “D” representing the Federal Republic of Germany above, and the respective mint mark (“A”, “D”, “F”, “G”, or “J”) on the left. Additionally, the artist’s signet and the year of issue, “2026,” are featured below. Encircling the design, the twelve stars of the European Union symbolize unity and cohesion within the Eurozone.

Klimahaus Bremerhaven itself is a renowned science and adventure museum dedicated to climate and weather phenomena. Its innovative exhibitions take visitors on a journey through different climate zones, replicating environments from around the world along the eighth longitude. The striking architecture, resembling a ship or floating iceberg, reinforces the museum’s connection to global climate awareness and maritime themes. With its immersive experiences and scientific focus, Klimahaus stands as a crucial institution for sustainability education and environmental consciousness in Germany.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
