Description

Békés County, located in southeastern Hungary, is one of the country’s leading agricultural regions, known for its fertile lands that produce abundant wheat, corn, and sunflower crops. The Körös rivers flow through the county, providing essential irrigation and supporting tourism and water sports. Rich in historical and ethnographic heritage, Békés County reflects a unique blend of Hungarian and Slovak cultures. Its administrative seat, Békéscsaba, serves as the cultural, economic, and transportation hub of the region. The city is renowned for its Csabai sausage, a Hungarikum, celebrated annually at the Csabai Sausage Festival. Békéscsaba also holds cultural significance as the childhood home of famed painter Mihály Munkácsy, whose works and personal artifacts are displayed in the Munkácsy Mihály Museum. The city’s strong Slovak heritage, vibrant theaters, museums, and the picturesque Élővíz Canal add to its charm. Nearby, the town of Gyula draws visitors with its historic brick castle, the Castle Spa, and popular thermal and medicinal baths. With its peaceful rural landscapes, rich cultural life, and accessible location, Békés County offers an appealing destination for relaxation and exploration.

The left side features architectural details of Békéscsaba’s two Lutheran churches—the Small Church and the Great Church—with the inscription "Békéscsaba, the city of Munkácsy" above. On the right, Mihály Munkácsy’s portrait appears on a painter’s palette. Below are the denomination with the "Ft" symbol, "HUNGARY", the year of issue, and the mint mark "BP."

The Békéscsaba Small Church, an 18th-century Baroque-style Roman Catholic church, stands at the city’s heart. Its simple yet elegant design is complemented by a richly decorated interior, serving as a key religious and cultural center. The Békéscsaba Great Church, a late 19th-century Neo-Gothic landmark, is known for its towering spires, stained-glass windows, and ornate interior, hosting both religious services and cultural events.

Mihály Munkácsy (1844–1900), one of Hungary’s most renowned painters, gained international fame for his realistic and emotive works. Born Michael Lieb in Munkács (now Mukachevo, Ukraine), he studied in Budapest, Vienna, and Munich. His acclaimed pieces, like "The Condemned Cell" (1872) and "Christ before Pilate" (1881), part of the "Christ Trilogy", highlight his mastery in portraying historical, biblical, and social themes. Honored with the French Legion of Honour, Munkácsy’s legacy endures in the art world.

Depicts Gyula Castle at the top left, Hungary’s only surviving Gothic brick castle, built in the 15th century and notable for its role during the Ottoman sieges, including the 1566 siege. Today, it operates as a museum with interactive exhibits, hosts the Gyula Castle Theater Festival, and offers panoramic views from its tower. Below it, a detail of the Wenckheim Palace in Szabadkígyós is shown, a grand neo-Baroque castle designed by Miklós Ybl in the late 19th century. Known for its ornate interiors and expansive English-style gardens, it now functions as a museum and cultural venue.

In the center, the inscription "Békés County" appears above an illustration of the Volgamenti Hérics (Adonis volgensis), a rare, protected plant native to the region’s dry grasslands. Recognizable by its bright yellow spring flowers and fine, thread-like leaves, it holds significant conservation value due to habitat loss from agricultural expansion.

On the right, a stylized map of Békés County highlights Békéscsaba, the county seat, with the engraver’s privy mark placed at the bottom.
