Description

The 7th Asian Games were held from August 24 to September 4, 1974, in Tehran, Iran, marking the first time the event took place in the Middle East. Organized under the auspices of the Asian Games Federation, the Games featured 3,010 athletes from 25 countries competing in 16 sports, including debut events like fencing and gymnastics. The event was notable for its grand scale, with Iran investing heavily in modern sports facilities, such as the Aryamehr Sports Complex (now Azadi Sports Complex). The Games also saw the participation of China for the first time while excluding Israel due to political tensions, setting a precedent that influenced future Asian Games.

Obverse

Depicts Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi facing left, an inscription above "Mohammadreza Pahlavi Shah Aryamhar, the Shahanshah "King of Kings" of Iran" in Persian.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (1919–1980) was the last Shah of Iran, ruling from 1941 until the Iranian Revolution in 1979. He pursued rapid modernization, economic growth, and Westernization through policies like the White Revolution but faced growing opposition due to political repression, widespread corruption, and increasing authoritarianism. His close ties with the West, particularly the United States, and his secret police, SAVAK, fueled resentment among various social and religious groups. Amidst mass protests and unrest, he was forced into exile in 1979, leading to the establishment of the Islamic Republic under Ayatollah Khomeini. He died in Egypt in 1980.
