Description

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant Islamic holidays, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. Celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, it coincides with the final days of the Hajj pilgrimage. Muslims around the world mark the occasion by performing special prayers, sharing festive meals, and distributing meat from sacrificial animals—typically sheep, goats, or cows—to family, friends, and those in need. The holiday emphasizes themes of faith, charity, and community, reinforcing the values of generosity and compassion.

The Kaaba, located at the center of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is Islam’s holiest site and the focal point of Muslim prayers. A cuboid structure draped in a black and gold silk covering known as the kiswah, it is believed to have been originally built by the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (Ishmael) as a house of worship for the one true God. Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during their daily prayers (qibla) and perform the tawaf—circumambulating the structure seven times—during the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. The Kaaba houses the sacred Black Stone, which is revered but not worshiped, and has been reconstructed multiple times throughout history due to natural and human-made damage.
