Description

The coin commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, was observed on May 9, 2025. On this day in 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman delivered a historic speech that laid the foundation for what would later become the European Union. In his address, Schuman proposed the pooling of French and German coal and steel production—an initiative aimed at accelerating Europe’s post-war recovery while preventing future conflicts between the two nations. His vision was shaped by the memory of three devastating wars between France and Germany: the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, World War I (1914–1918), and World War II (1939–1945).

The Schuman Declaration led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community on April 18, 1951, fostering economic cooperation as a means of securing lasting peace. This initiative laid the groundwork for deeper European integration, culminating in the establishment of the European Economic Community in 1957 and, ultimately, the European Union as we know it today. The coin serves as a tribute to this pivotal moment in history, celebrating Schuman’s enduring legacy of unity and collaboration in Europe.
