The Cape horse mackerel (Trachurus capensis) is a species of marine fish found along the coastal waters of southern Africa, particularly from Angola to South Africa. It belongs to the jack family (Carangidae) and is an important species in commercial fisheries. Recognizable by its elongated, silver body with a dark stripe along its lateral line, it primarily inhabits continental shelf waters at depths of up to 500 meters. The Cape horse mackerel is a fast-swimming, schooling fish, feeding on plankton, small crustaceans, and fish larvae, while serving as prey for larger predators such as tunas, sharks, and marine mammals. It is a vital part of regional ecosystems and supports significant fishing industries, particularly in Namibia and South Africa.
